Password protection problem

There is a folder I want to protect in my site. Whenever I try to protect it, I can no longer access it. It will say a 404 error but If unprotect it, I can access it without any problems. Any solution to this?

1. How are you password protecting it?
2. Are you sure it is a 404 error? That is File Not Found.
