I've used Outlook for quite a few years without too many problems, but just lately it seems to have sprung quite a few leaks with the mighty Microsoft not doing too much about it, thank god for antivirus etc. I'm now installing Thunderbird. Is Thunderbird any better than Outlook at preventing the rubbish from getting onto my PC or am I wasting my time?

try mulberry, works for both pop3 and imap4, and its highly configurable email client.

Cheers for that, I'm gonna try Thunderbird now I've downloaded and configured it, I really wanted TBird users to give me their thoughts on it.

Thanks anyway ;)

The spam filter wil at first make some mistakes, it adjust with everything you mark as wanted or unwanted. So after a while it works well
No e-mail that isn't trusted shal run scripts or show images.
That prevents new spam and increases security.
Of course there is no such thing as a built in anti-vir with an e-mail client, but again the only way viruses are going to run is by explicitly alowing it to.
Wich triggers your normal anti-vir etc (if it didn't already delete/rename the e-mail).

Many antiviruses integrate into Outlook (and sometimes Express) to scan emails as they're downloaded from the server. However... Most antivirus apps scan files as they're written as well as read from the drive, which should pick up on attachments. So there should always be some form of security for you.

Also, many ISP's/mail providers also scan for viruses at the server, either rejecting attachments, or warning the user that there may be a virus, and to not open the attachments. My university has it set up to put tags like "{SPAM}" and "{VIRUS}" in the subject field. Sometimes it gets a bit excited and puts "{SPAM}{SPAM}{SPAM}"!

Thunderbird is always better than Outlook, it has a good spam filter and never gives me any problems. You shouldn't have any problems with it.......;)

I had used email clients but i felt that web based emails are much better and furthur more the clients are too basic to use.
I agree there are few good email clients but I enjoy web based ones.
Also thunderbird is yes better , it is freeware. i used thunderbird many times when was using UBUNTu.
