php file create denied?

i was creating a calendar script using PHP and when i try to create the text files for the dates it says that the permission has been denied. has it been disabled, because i had it working before? if it's because it puts too much load on the server i'll stick with a mysql database but if not then what happened?

Did you CHMOD the directory to 777?

surprisingly chmoding the public_html folder worked.

strange, it worked without chmoding yesterday...
