Php mail not working, help would be appreciated!

I have Zen Cart configured on my free hosting account. However, when I try to send emails it gives me the error message

"Email Error: Could not instantiate mail function. Please check Admin->Configuration->Email Options->Email Transport."

I haven't changed any of my email configurations since last week, when the emails were sending fine without any problems. Can you please help me fix the problem or provide some explanation?

Could be a server problem. Temporary.
Does Zen Cart allow SMTP?

Use Gmail for a while.

Well, can you tell me what are the settings you can change?

Edit: How important is your work? Do you really need SMTP configured? I think PHP mail() will be back on soon. Keep an eye on http://status.x10hosting.com/
