phpBB Update Error

I've been trying to update my phpBB installation from 3.0.8 to the latest version, 3.0.9. I've been using the auto-update package. When I get to the file check, it checks some (usually 28 or 48) files, but then stops and gives me a "500 internal server error". I tried to look at the error log in cPanel but it is blank. Is it the case or some sort of error or are the servers set up in such a way that prevents these sorts of automatic scripts?

There is a system set up to limit how long a PHP script can execute. It's likely the auto updater is executing longer than this alloted time span. I would recommend downloading the update directly from phpBB's website, and uploading the updated files to your account via FTP.
