So I made a request to get Sphinx installed on the webservers here because phpbb3 is moving towards using this as the search client in 3.2 this meaning, if we dont have access to this script the newer versions of phpbb3 wont work. As of yet 3.2 is not released so it wont cause any problems, but my theory is to get it installed before the errors start occuring.
This search feature can also be used with the current version 3.1 of phpbb3 and it will allow for better scaling, it has a superior querying syntax and some additional features listed at http://sphinxsearch.com/doc.html#searching. Plus it will support stemming which will give out better results and will generally allow for a more smooth operation of the search function.
The response of the board was that I would need to get more support before they would install it. So if anyone is interested in this, or would like to see this developed please show your support here. thanks.
currently the sphinx project is in beta and installation instructions for the code into the current release version of phpbb3 can be seen here: http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=796875&st=0&sk=t&sd=a
I believe, but could be wrong that this is what http://phpbb.com currently uses for there search engine on their board.
