Is there a .htaccess file in that directory or the one above it? Also are you using any cgi/perl scripts?

You really need to give us move information in order for us to be able to diagnose the problem.
Can you post the contents of any 'error_log' files?

PHP is installed as a CGI binary for all versions of PHP on all servers. Attemping to change PHP configuration settings using php_flag and php_admin_flag within .htaccess files will just result in HTTP 500 errors, since PHP is not installed within Apache (The HTTP server) as a module. Remove them and the 500 errors should stop appearing.
