Ok, I have downloaded this movie file that was a *.AVI file but I am finding it hard to open it and play. I have tried most players like DivX, Windows Media Player, WinAMP, RealPlayer, PowerDVD, etc.

The problem I have is that none on the programs can start the movie clip. Some, like Windows Media Player do not support this file type.

Can somebody help me out?

Download VLC it plays anything , sometimes even with the k-lite codec pack (thats almost all codecs) It just wont play cause the players are crappy , but with VLC it will .

well if you still have the original avi file what you can try to do is insert in windows movie maker and convert it to a wmv or something

ive done that with avi's i couldnt view in the past
but yes unless you get some codecs, windows media player and quicktime alternative wont play those kinds of avi's

Well I have tried a few of these. Windows Movie Maker could not import the file as it said the file was invalid or corrupt. The K-Lite codec pack's media player failed to render the thing and did not attempt to continue loading.

I am now downloading the VLC player thing but at this stage I feel sure that either the download wasn't fully complete or that the file is corrupted.

Does anyone know of anyway to look at video files (*.AVI specificly) even if they are incomplete?

goto http://gspot.headbands.com and get a copy of Gspot, then open ur .avi file in it and verify the codec that is used in the avi container, then proceed to freecodecs to get your correct codecs.

.mpq file is container if im not mistaken.

you need to download the DVIX plugin for your WMP or other.

Just so everyone knows... this isn't a codec issue. The file he wants to view is incomplete. No codec will be able to play a movie if it's incomplete. There is a program called AVIPreview which allows you to view .avi files which are not whole (i.e. not finished downloading).

I downloaded the DVIX plugin and all AVI videos I download work great now.

'Rendering failed
System reports:Ox8004022F The file format is invalid'

There is no way I can view it, so end of story.

Just for other people that maybe having the same problem, you can use a program called GSpot (install file included in zip file attached to post) which you use to open the file and it displays all sorts of info about it, e.g what codecs it needs. It also does a bit of error checking and actually tells you (well in my case it does) where the problem is.

The problem with mine is that it 'is and invalid AVI file due to corruption of data in the header. This is a serious problem, and this file is not likely to be playable.

Note to Moderators: You may now definately lock this topic as this topic is no longer neccessary to have people help me. But do not delete this post as it contains info that may help others having similar errors to see if their files have the same fate as mine.

All you have to do is get Windows Media Player 11 or 10 , or DivX i've never had this prob , and Get "Windows Xp Home / Pro SP2" that updates most of you're drivers and gives you extra sec

As the program said, the file is corrupt and is not playable, nothing can bring it back, end of story :)
