Protected Directory problem

One of my dirctories is password protected [through CPanel]. However lately, every time i try to access that directory from the web, eg

http://****.x10hosting.com/protecteddirectory/

the page goes to a 404, "Page cannot be found".

It used to be working all right and i did not change any password or .htaccess settings.

Is there even an index page in the directory?

Yes. There is an index.html page. I only encountered this problem recently.

I think the problem is solved. The error resided in the .htaccess file. The CPanel Hotlink Protection code in the .htaccess file conflicted with other code, thus I could not enable/disable Hotlink Protection too. I deleted the entire .htaccess file and enabled Hotlink Protection. This time, the hotlink could world. In addition, I believe after reseting the .htaccess file, I can access my protected directory again.
