Hi,

I have the Ad-Free plan from x10 hosting. It comes with 10 GB (10,000 MB) of bandwidth per month.

I'm curious as to how long that would last if I had in the range of 10,000+ pageviews per day.

Also, can someone explain to my what factors contribute to bandwidth? Obviously traffic does, and images, but is there anything else?

It's hard to say how much bw it will take for 10,000 views per day. It depends mostly on the way your site is made. For example if you use a large amounts of images it will cost you bw. If this helps, my site gets 250 unique visitors a month and it uses 0% of the 20000 MBs of bw.

If you're really concerned on saving bw, here's some tips you can do:
  • Link you're pages to CSS style sheets. This is good in general if you have one central style from page to page. Since the person downloads the css file automatically when they view your site they will have it cashed for every other page they view on your site. The information that would otherwise be downloaded every time they go to a page is already with them.
  • Use low amounts of images. Some effects given by images can be achieved form well made site design.
  • Use images over and over on different pages. For example a divider image, the bg, the logo, etc.
  • If you have js on every page, link to it like the css styles. It's the same idea as linking to them.
  • Slim down you're site in general. Less flash, images, etc.
  • Use image formats intelligently. Use png for images that you need to be losslessly compressed and jpeg for photographs and huge images. I suggest saving an image in both formats and comparing there size.(sometimes png can be smaller). Lastly if you have good graphics software (at least better then MS Paint) you can save png images with only grayscale or limited colours. If you have a black and white image, grayscale can save a large amount of space (and thus bw).

The amount of Bandwidth you use all depends on the types of site you have. A download site will use a lot of bandwidth, whereas a simple text only site will use hardly any. The only way you can tell how much bandwidth you are going to use is to try it for a month and see.

I normally use no more than 500Mb of bandwidth a month (And most of that i me downloading my weekly backups)

Cool,

Thanks for the info.

Anyone know how phpBB3 is on bandwidth, I know it has it's own caching system. Does that make a difference?

phpBB3 is very light on bandwidth, until you start loading it's themes down with images/excessive CSS and forum attachments.
