Hiya!

Was out on my weekend shoot with a borrowed 4GB card from my friend. Spring having already arrived, got a few good shots as well. But when I came home, the laptop (Compaq Presario V3000) refused to greet my 4GB card :-O

The reader actually does read the 2GB ones and the card is not corrupt as I could view/use the card in the camera. A little googling and I came to know its a generic problem, especially with laptops having card readers from Texas Inst.

I did come to know bout a few steps for rectifying the issue (from "get a new reader/laptop" to "install XYZ driver -> Change XYZ settings in registry") but non of them was a install-and-forget solution.

Any idea bout any fix/driver which i just need to replace without touching the registry? There is a windows FIX as well but could not find the link to it for trying out.

Anyone else with a similar problem?

Regards,
P

The laptop may not accept SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) cards. There is nothing wrong with your laptop, but the release of these newer cards won't be compatible. I'm not sure if any drivers will solve this, but it is unlikely, due to the makeup of these cards.

Like most older cameras, like my Coolpix P2, it won't accept anything bigger than 2GB.

Try purchasing a memory card reader that supports SDHC and you'll be fine.

Installing the specific patch and editing the registry is not as hard as it appears to be. Editing the registry is quite easy, you just want to be careful with what you do in there, making sure you don't fatfinger anything in or out of there, and make sure the value is set up correctly. Other than that, it's straightforward. As per the camera, have you tried using a USB cord to plug the camera into the PC? I know that many of the newer ones are using SDHC cards. One of my cameras has a 8GB SDHC memory stick in it, and though I don't have any card readers on my gaming PC or any of my PCs for that matter, plugging the camera in via USB allows Vista to mount the card and recognize the file system.
