Okay i want to try and set up a server (i dont know what im getting myself into), and im debating on windows server 2000, 2003, Redhat Linux 9, or a different linux...

Can i have php on a windows based server, or do i have to have asp?

How hard is it to set up a server?

RedHat 9 is far too old. I find linux servers to be better though.

I would say a good distro for a server would be either:
SuSE Enterprise Linux 9 (SLES) or
RedHat Enterprise 4 (RHEL) (CentOS 4 if you don't want to pay for RHEL)

The only problem with Windows is that you will need to download all the extra software like Apache, PHP and so on where linux already has all the software you need.

Yes, if you are new at setting "servers" up, I would go with Apache2Triad. I have used that on my windows box for a while now, and havent had any problems. It takes care of setting up the http/mysql/ftp/smtp servers, and has other handy things like perl, phpmyadmin, etc that it sets up for you, like he ^^ said ;)
