I am looking for various ( legal / legit ) ways to boost the popularity of my website?

Something along the lines of like Banner or Link exchanges. I wonder if there is something else out there that would also work?

I can't afford to pay for anything, so the service would have to be free to use.

I plan to sign up with Alexa to do the page ranking, but I would like to get a good saturation of my website before signing up there.

Errr....
Get listed in google, update your site reguarly with decent and relevent content. Use meta keywords. Get links from other sites with a similar theme.
Once I have my layout sorted i'll happily link to you.

Okay ... not to sound like a noob, but how would I go about being listed with Google?
I plan to do keep my site updated ( once it gets up, that is )
I am also going to work on getting signed up with Google AdSense or something similar. Hoping that helps, too.

I personally use the webmaster tools link as it provides much more data about your site. The top searches, any problems when crawling etc.

Getting your links on other websites will increase your Google PR, that's always a plus. You could try Affiliate Programs to exchange visitors -- AdminFusion.com has a program called PostFusion where users exchange posts.

Yeah. I am already signed up with a "Traffic Exchange", am in the works to trade links with members of x10. Also, willing to set up a banner rotation and possibly offer an "award" ( which would require people to link back to my site )

I just know I need a good linkage to other sites, and about 500-1000 hits a month to qualify with Google Adsense or other ad marketing sites ( like Intellitxt, etc )
