For anyone who is looking for the SMF Beta 3, the SMF developers have released SMF 2.0 Beta 3 as of the last hour. I'll be putting it up on my home server, and if it is impressive, I'll post a link to my server for you guys to check it out, or I'll record a video of everything in it.

It can be downloaded at www.simplemachines.org

NOTICE: IF YOU WISH TO USE THIS VERSION OF SMF, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU DO A FULL BACKUP OF YOUR SITE DATA AND DATABASES BEFORE INSTALLING/UPGRADING. SMF 2.0 STILL CONTAINS BUGS THAT ARE BEING WORKED OUT AND YOU MAY LOSE SOME OF YOUR DATABASE DATA BECAUSE OF THIS ROLL-UP. TAKE THE BACKUPS VIA cPanel AND MAKE SURE THEY ARE READABLE.

It's pretty much feature packed compared to SMF 1.1.4. I'm running it on my home server as well. Not noticing much of a performance increase, but some of the features are looking very useful, and hey, it means less mods for me to have to deal with!

Did you take a look around? There is some new things like an Infraction system, and a built-in Search Engine recognition system, and some more.

Great, I can start work on my site now. It's going to be built entirely around SMF 2.0!

It looks pretty good, I' still going to stick with SMF 1.14 until the themes and mods have been changed, and there is a stable release of SMF 2. Which could take a while.

Is smf much different from phpbb?

What about mods? are they alredy in it or ae they easy to install.

I'm having sooooo much trouble with mods in phpBB3 and I can't seem to get the fully modded phpBB2 installed (install won't even start) that I may switch to this if it easier.

Ok I figured out that it is a hell of a lot easier to add mods in smf then phpbb.

but where can I get some really nice templates similar to mine http://stillphotomemory.x10hosting.com (nice, clean, rounded corners)?

and is there a mod for a point system or something like that?

I'm pretty sure there is, I'll take a look around for you, but it is not for SMF 2.0 most likely. When the beta is out for more days, the developers will start releasing 2.0 mod packages.

One of the ones I found was called SMFShop. That should work for you :)

@ dcoates: you could use the built in karma system for points if you like. Alot of features have to be turned on now in the ACp under Configuration>>>features and options>>>Core features.

@ dcoates: SMF is much different then phpbb. It is more secure and has an easier way of installing mods. Not to mention all the new features in 2.0 Also someone mentioned that SMF 2.0 might still have some bugs in it. The devs have worked real hard in putting this version together and getting it out the door. It has been in the works now for about 18 months. Although there might be a few bugs left behind there should be no way to lose any info or data if you upgrade. PLEASE keep in mind though that this is still beta. It is NOT feature locked yet so there should be more to come. ;)

@ coolv1994: there is a lot more to it then that. with SMF 2.0 things have been moved around enough that installing themes to a modded version of SMF should now be very simple to do as there will be no having to add tabs to new themes and such. (hope that makes sense and it will if you know SMF at all)

Please read this and download the changelog from the downloads page to see what is really going on:
