With all of the new spell check technologies, is it really important for grades 1-6 to spend an hour a day learning how to spell? If not an hour a day, then 30 min? Or are they spending too little time a day learning how to spell?

The question is this: Is spelling worth our time and money, or is it better spent elsewhere?

What kind of question is this?

What about hand written text? Even if you ignore everything else (the inaccuracy of spell checking, the fact that many people ignore it all together etc) you can't overlook how much you have to write nowadays. Pencil and paper is far from being superceded by anything.

There's no doubt that technology is slowing creeping into all facets of our lives.

Like *Face has pointed out above, there are numerous instances where pencil/pen and paper are still of importance - and thus, so is spelling. (For instance, written examinations taken by students.)

Even with the state of spelling technology today, it is still NOT flawless.

Furthermore, this issue has many implications.

Today's society is heavily promoting the use of technology, and with the increase in technology-use comes an increasing reliance on the technology to complete all those minor (and sometimes classified as 'annoying') jobs, and cause a decline in level of spelling of today's generation.

The problem has been noticeable especially over the last 10 years.

It seems as though the generation of today is getting fatter, getting crazier, and getting dumber.

Handwriting will always be necessary.

The technology will go up, but a backup solution (like in times when there's no electricity?) must be present...

A valid point.

I also think that there is a lack of reading in this nation. But it could be a local thing.

"It seems as though the generation of today is getting fatter, getting crazier, and getting dumber."

I'm not to sure about the dumber...

Wait a minute, you know your in a bad situation when kids who have english as thier second language are winning your spelling bees...

Think of this once
If you never had spelling lessons, your vocabulary would probably be much smaller.
If you don't know how to spell a word, you'd probably type it into a computer wrong. The computer would then give you a choice of options. They all seem similar. How would you know what is the right spelling?

It is again Human Vs Computer. If there are no spelling learning who will design software for correcting spelling :)

It is same situation like now software developer knows more banking or domain knowledge then actual practitioners.

So without we knowing correct thing, computer software developer will make could as cud and would as wud.

What about our all knowledge. Already calculator has spoilt us to the extent that to add 2 digit numbers we need calci (!!!).

If we depend on machine all the time all our brain sharpness will go away and I do not know where it will lead us to. I still remember the days when calculator was not allowed in our college exams and we use to take help of log tables for big calculation.

And I think it makes us happy when we crunch number faster in our mind while calculator user struggle with keys.
