Why does Japan get it a month before we do? Are they still developing the US version or just bein lazy?

Nah. This always happens. Happens in reverse with a lot of US games in other countries. I know Australia not only has to wait months for a lot of games to come, but they have to pay a lot more for them as well.

It's just the way stuff works, but because I don't have a Wii, it doesn't matter to me. I used to love playing Super Smash Bros. on my friend's N64 before his house caught fire. Awww.... :(

As a joke, my friend has recently been going to GameStop and other stores asking if he can get Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the PS2. He actually got kicked out of GameStop once for doing this.

I'd rather play a game in English rather than have Japanese characters jump out at me.

Plus, they're probably going to take out the anime references.

Oddly enough you're likely not that far off XD

Part of why Japan gets it first is a good chunk of games are actually developed there - they get them first because they're right next to the factory.

The side effect of that is there's a lot of references in japan that don't make sense here, and vice versa (similar to internet "memes" - they can be popular one place but make no sense elsewhere). So, they have to localize the game - that basically involves gutting jokes that don't make sense, rewriting ones so they do, and where they had to completely remove them, toss in some new ones that do.

That's tricky though - that requires a mostly complete game before you can start gutting it and rebuilding the jokes/language in it so it matches, so it tacks time onto the release date.

Ever play a game that didn't make any sense? Like Zero Wing? Watch the credits; there should be a part that says Localization. The guys in that department dun farked up if the game doesn't make sense:

In ad 2101 war was beginning.
What happen?
Someone set up us the bomb. We get signal.
What?!?
Main screen turn on.
It's you!
How are you gentlemen. All your base are belong to us. You are on the way to destruction.
What you say?!?
You have no chance to survive make your time. Ha ha ha.

Yeah. Zero Wing's a perfect example of when they screwed up localization. I think I can live with a month tacked on the release date, long as it avoids the dreaded "All your base are belong to us" :)
