I like vbulletin because its fast and requires minimum editing while installing hack and mods.

I would recommend IPB 2.04 and vB since they are nice and secure...

@ ironcross77: i have encountered some slow loading Vb forums..

Why do you always change topic? It has to do with the Server and how bulky they are.

Now back on topic. Ikonboard is good for a free one :).

My favourite is phpBB, very fast, IPB is good, I tested all most of them available free, phpBB is very popular, lost of hacks are available. SMF, posts can be accessed form WAP enabled devices (not performing well in my Sony Ericsson T610 WAP 2.0 set). IPB free version is limited.
vBulletin demo is very good but I not installed in my space.

Have time then go to their community/forum sites, there are losts of material available, webmaster can easily evaluate wich forum is suitable for his site.

Well for the purposes of keeping legal, i'm currently using SMF. Which is OK, but I think full version VB has to be the most versatile.

vBulletin is definately the best forum software I have used so far. I think this topic is already being discussed in another thread, I'm not sure though.
