AVG 8 is a big improvement on the earlier versions of AVG, the free package now comes with spyware protection, virus protection, link scanner, email scanner, and a new 2.0 layout. When scanning for viruses it doesnt drain your computers performance like most scanners.

Paint.NET and the new AVG are great programs to have (I've got both!)

AVG is a full suite now, and still uses less resources than all of it's competitors. However, I disabled the add-on in Firefox for scanning Google links as it occasionally causes the browser to hang

I use notepad++ for all my HTML/PHP work. Its fast, has a great UI and supports syntax highlighting for what 50+ languages by default.

For AV I use avast

I Recommend Programmer's Notepad 2, very powerful and lightweight, good for programming in just about anything i could think of. as well as code snippets and ASCII characters list for HTML i find it very useful indeed!

Edit: Also GIMP is a nice image editor, all though very taxing on the system, I find it's Linux original better than the windows port

Notepad++ ROCKS! FTW!

Also for all your encoding purposes - look for Super.

Is Paint.NET better than GIMP?
In my opinion, no. They're both open source, but GIMP runs on many more platforms due to being written in C. Paint.NET is written in mostly C# (an interpreted language created by Microsoft), and runs only on Windows XP and Vista. GIMP runs on more versions of Windows:
GIMP should run on any NT-based version of Windows (NT4, 2000, XP or Vista). Older GIMP versions (2.0.x) could also work with older versions of Windows such as Windows 95 but they are not supported anymore.
It also runs on Linux, Mac, and Unix, and can be ported to other platforms.

Before anyone mentions Mono, Paint.NET does not have Mono support, and although a "paint-mono" project exists, no downloads are available yet.

The only problem with winrar is the nagging screen. Haven't tried it in years but I assume it is still there. Another alternative would be 7zip.org

I think that yes, Paint.NET is better. I've tried both and can't get used to GIMP's UI as easily as I could PDN's

In my opinion VLC quite simply outweighs Winamp

Plus, now that real allows you to download from youtube WinAMP is as good as dead

Another Thing, Doesn't TechyAsh already have a sticky on free software in this forum
Not suggesting as i'm not that sure of the rules
