If that's the case, wouldn't hackers have near-ultimate control? It's insane how simply compromisable these important systems seem to be.

lol this kinda remember me Live Free or Die Hard (also known as Die Hard 4.0 in some places). Hackers taking over the world? Not if John McLane is there to stop them. ;)

I know all about hacking and have participated in antihacking communities, guys. The only reason that the hackers could have done that is that the generator was poorly made and relied on computer-governed parts that were stopped or sped up as part of the attack. Like a computer overheating because the fan was shut off. There is a command for that. Really, such an important generator should have all the security kinks worked out before putting itself out there like that -_-;;;

Wow....deathpie, you do seem to know a lot about things and an antihacking community? So Can you tell me if a 'firesale' is possible in the real world....
