Trouble creating MYSQL database

I am having trouble adding databases. Whenever I try to add one, it just does not show up in the list of databases. Same thing with users. However, I do get a message saying "Added the database" + name. Why am I getting this problem?

I've looked at the following tutorials, and the databases still aren't showing up. Why is this?
