Haven't played an FPS on a computer since Wolfenstein 3d, so I'll recommend that one :p.

Don't play much FPS
The ons I played:
Return to Wolfenstein, renegade, FEAR, PREY, Some stupid Star trek game and quake 4, doom 95, wolfenstein 3d.

Overall I think is Renegade, not because of the graphics, but the Multi player online is wicked! To play SP I think it's FEAR, though it's a bit too easy ;)

EDIT: to ebreleased would be http://www.battlefield-heroes.com/ looks nice and fun!

I haven't heard of anything other than Assasian's Creed, sorry. You can try Halo if you don't have it, as Halo Multiplayer is fun, especially when you join the servers I host every weekend.

I've heard the same thing as well. At a very small forum that I go to, they've recently converted over to a GMod/Team Fortress 2 forum, along with some other talk as well and one of the members there is severely addicted to Team Fortress 2. That's all I see them play on in Steam :p

As mentioned before, get the Orange Box.

You have Half Life 2, Episode 1 & 2 for your SP needs.
You can play TF2, HL2DM (though not that good IMO) and CS:S for MP
Graphics of all games are awesome :)

PS: Wolf 3D rocks.

I don't know about ultimate, but my favorite has always been the Half Life and Unreal Tournament series.

Deus Ex (1).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_Ex

The game almost had a Linux port, but the company porting it (who ported a other titles in the past) when out of business. But the good news is, it works pretty well in Wine.

It's very open-ended. Do you want to go into the next room and kill all the enemies, or do you want to sneak past them? How about making a compromise, and using nonlethal weapons to knock them out? It's your decision, and NPCs in the game will criticize or congratulate you on your choice. However, as in real life, you can't make everyone happy. Some characters prefer you to kill all bad guys, but others will get mad at you for using lethal force.

You come across a wooden locked door. You can be loud and shoot it down or blow it up with explosives, or silently pick the lock. You can also look around for the key if it's available. If it's a metal door protected with a code and opened through a keypad, you can choose to hack the keypad, or snoop around for the key code.

The Orange Box is sweet. Make sure when you get it you take the time to play through all of Portal though. It only takes a day or two at most and is very fun.

But yea, TF2 is a great online FPS. One of the main reasons is that everyone starts out with their own special arrays of guns -- it's not about finding and using the gun you want, you get it as soon as you spawn!
