Unable to install Jommla Extations

Hello

I am unable to install some joomla extensions I get this error There was a error uploading this file to the server. I believe this is due to upload_max_filesize but when I try to put php_value upload_max_filexsize 8M in .htaccess I get a internal server error.

Does any one have a work around to this?
