i bought a new laptop

it had ubuntu

i wanted windows

so i installed xp

then realised a lot of the hard disk was in the unix part

i uninstalled everthing

put windows

but now it would not hibernate (it did before)

then i re installed windows and saw an option to rewrite the core memory - i cant remember the name - MBR ? the master boot record and some other ... i did that in the hope that hibernate will work

well i was able to put windows xp again but no hibernate (i dont have a visata cd)

question - should i start with unix again and re write the master boot record?

asking as it warns that the whole puter can be unusable soemtimes if this is over written

i really miss hiberante

the windows installer writes a boot loader to the MBR ...
you don't need to put linux back on although I would... but I can't stand windows...

when you do the windows XP install delete all partitions and create a new one using the whole disk.... if you didn't already...
make sure ACPI is turned on in the BIOS
windows XP may not have drivers by default so you may have to find them for your model laptop and turn set the ACPI options to allow hibernate...

but like I said I would stick with Linux... Ubuntu is about the easiest distro out there...

ty adrenlinerush - but my BIOS does not have any ACP switch - i looked under all the menus it has Power (I enabled the wake up on LAN) and advanced. i guess i need to re insall Ubuntu cause they dont ship this HCL laptop with windows.

i bought it casue it was 30% cheaper.
