Download a FTP client (FileZilla is good). Setup the ftp account.

FTP address/Host : your domain name for your site.(mine is defectalisman.exofire.com)
Username : Your cPanel username
Password : Your cPanel password

Call it x10 Hosting or what ever and then connect. Once you are conected you can copy files from your local computer to the server. Put them in "public_html".

If you get stuck ask here and I will see what I can do.

thank you so much for this. I have successfully uploaded my site. Not much to look at at the moment but now I know I can upload it I shall really be able to get cracking.

Any idea why trying to connect to the same place from front page directly wouldn't work? I got a login box to appear but it wouldn't accept my password.

Not to sure, never liked Front Page. Dreamweaver is much nicer.
Even with Dreamweaver I have trouble uploading files.
Did you put in the same details you used for the FTP client?

yes. only using frontpage as I have a inherited a copy and can't afford to upgrade.

out of interest everything uploaded OK but I cant get the web page to display. I have a feeling it's due to me putting most of the files in the wrong place. I put them in public _html as you said but I still get he standardised blue screen. I'm going to go and reread the start guide but if anyone happens to know the correct location I'd be grateful.

Did you save the first page that people are going to hit as "index.html" or "index.php"? If not then delete the "index.html" that is in the "public_html" folder and save the first page that you want people to go to as "index.html".

I get allot of what appears to Jap or Chinese characters ? WTF ?
Try uploading the index.html again.

Also when using www before the address I get a bad gateway error.
Explain what you did again please !

I created a webpage using frontpage on my C drive. I then copied the entirety of lhcounselling into the public_html folder and deleted the original index page.(using filezilla) I have tried just copying over index.html with out the rest of the folder but I get exactly the same issue. I may have applied the theme using css so I shall change that and see if it works. You should see a page headed Psychodynamic Counselling with a clip art picture underneath along side which is a few contact details. I plan to expand the site once I have it successfully uploaded but since this is my first try at building a site since doing the theory of web design in high school I wanted to upload a basic page first just to learn how to publish stuff on the web. so much for "even the most basic computer user can publish their own website these days". I'm fairly good with computers but I normally stick to excel and word. This is my first try at web design.
Edit:
just a thought but should I have registered the site as www.lhcounselling? I assumed I didn't need the www. bit as that would be put in automatically?
Edit:
now i'm really stumped. created a new page saved to hard drive in the folder www.lhcounselling.x10hosting.com
created a single web page. Applied theme without CSS.
replaced info.
moved whole folder to public_html

Nothing

Moved index.html out of named folder to public_html

still nothing.

do I need to move the entirety of folder contents out of folder to Public_html directly?

yea its better to have everything in one folde. Except for images which usually are in the images folder. If you dont want to to that you need to check the links for all your content and make sure its grabbing it from the right folder.
If you are using CSS make sure that its either linked right or right in the .html page itself
