Ways to cut down on CPU usage

I run a forum with the SimplePortal add on and a chatbox installed into it set to auto refresh every 5-10 seconds. I was just recently suspended for too much CPU usage and I want to ensure that never happens again.

Suggestions?

I'm on the adfree infinity plan if that matters.

Hello we do not allow chatboxes.. I suggest you get a CBOX or a xat chat...

Shoutbox\Chat Scripts Use of these scripts is strictly forbidden due to the amount of MySQL queries they take. Accounts found with chat scripts or shoutboxes will be suspended.

If you have any suggestions. I'm not clear as to the difference between cbox/the chatbox I had already. I am running an smf forum with smf portal that had a shoutbox built into it.
