I recently started using wordpress and my site more actively and the loading speed is extremely slow, in the range of 3 minutes if it loads at all, most of the time it displays an error message that the wordpress isn't on the server. It happens most at nights and mornings, but the slowness is pretty random. It's gotten to the point that the website is unusable. Is this usually how the speeds are? is errors in loading pages and pages not loading at all almost every time common? or is the server I am being abused? Thanks.

Are you using any WordPress plugins?
Some WordPress plugins are known to cause issues such as you are describing.
Also, there are a lot of images loading which could possibly be causing the site to load and perform less than optimally.
