It depends on the individual PC. I would go custom-built. But, overall you need a really good graphics card, a fair amount of RAM, and an up-to-date processor. A good sound card is helpful if you worry about sound quality.

Of course, I don't use my computer for gaming.

Dude,

None.

Go to a custom store (if you live in canada email us at: loneuatechnologies@gmail.com).

Or build it yourself.

All those places can charge 50-80% and sometimes more for the computer.

Trust me, build it or get it custom built.

I can attest to this. My friend bought a PC from a company (Feb, 2007):

Pentium D - 915 dual core 2.8GHz
2GB RAM (don't know the specs)
decent 256MB ATI video card
500GB SATA HDD
22" LCD monitor 1680x1050
$2200

I got almost the same thing one month later, built myself (March 2007):

same processor
1 GB PC2-5300 DDR2
nVidia GeForce 7300LE (his video card is a little better)
250GB SATA HDD
20" LCD monitor 1680x1050

$1050. For a further $200 in December, I upgraded to a 500GB SATA HDD (just like his) and 4GB RAM. So, much, much cheaper to custom build. I suppose one difference is he had to pay a significant amount for Windows Vista (don't know how much, built into the price), while I paid nothing for software.

Yep,

My custom computer cost me 985 bucks last month

Q6600 with Zalman zf9700
4GB OCZ RAM
Asus Motherboard
320GB SATA HDD
BFG Geforce 8800GT
NZXT Lexa-blackline

And more.

Do that and you will be golden

Like repeating the above replies...

Build it yourself.
Intel Core 2 Duo or Extreme (the Quad Core may be overkill unless you do graphic design)
Asus motherboard. Most will have overclocking tools if you are into that. Make sure you have enough ports to handle your burners and HDD if you plan on keeping old PATA drives. The latest gamer boards also have PCI-E with full 16x for 2 tandem video cards (as opposed to 16x/8x).
4GB RAM (patriot or kingston are IMO the more reliable, but OCZ has worked for me also)
a 80GB HDD for the OS(es) so you can reformat OS without need to "migrate" data.
500+GB for data storage/backup in RAID 5
latest nVidia series card(s)
Dual LCD monitors (1 for game fullscreen, 1 for keeping tabs on everything else.)
Wired keyboard/mouse (higher and more reliable feedback rate than bluetooth and who wants to change batteries while in the heat of battle ><")

I use the 2nd HD to store my DVD images of games to greatly decrease load times.

A deal-breaker (case and drives included) can run well under 1,500USD. If you wish to spend more (sound system XD) it'll still be well under the 2,000USD you'd spend for a similiar "alienware" custom model with all the trimings. You just don't get the cool stickers and the "noise-reduction foam" (costs like 2 bucks at your mom's fabric store, cut and install yourself).

As long as you get parts that will handle the games you want to play, brand doesn't make a difference.

I've got a customized Dell that handles Crysis quite well; I'm sure if I had an HP with equivalent stats it'd work just as well.

Well, Dell because I'm the most familiar with it. Besides, I think Dell owns Alienware as well. Otherwise, if you really want the best PC for gaming, go to a custom building company or build your own sweet rig.

My advice to all of you,

Dell blows. Sorry to be mean to the hardcore dell fans but they are so ridiculously overpriced that how people buy it is beyond me. Ever since dell bought alienware, same thing. Go to your local shop or do it yourself. I just put a tutorial in the Computers and Technology section, look at that and PM me your budget and i will find you parts from known places.

Good Luck

I'm not truly Dell hardcore. Half of the PCs in my house including my gaming computer which I still can't get to lag on any game yet at the max settings are all built by me (Crysis holds at 29fps most of the time, sometimes FPS is 50).
