I don't wanna spend £400 that's crazy, however I want something that's gonna make a difference. The difference between 1024x768 and 1152x864 at a reasonable fps.

Anybody got any tips ?

For high end DX10 gaming, get the nVidia 8800GT.

NOT the GTX and definately not the GTS. GTX is overpriced considering two 8800gt are better, and GTS doesn't perform as well as the GT and is more expensive.

If you don't want/need DX10, get a high end last gen card. Ie, ATI 1900 series or nVidia 7900 series. as they are much cheaper than their dx10 counter parts and still offer great performance on most games.

Although, if the games you play are a bit older, any card faster than the one you already have would be an improvement :)

personally I prefer ATI graphics cards but if you run Linux as I do you probably want an Nvidia chipset or you may not be able to get it working properly and be stuck using the generic vesa driver...

If you want a good midrange, go for an 8600GT, if you want to go higher, an 8800GT is your best pick. If you really can't afford anything go for a good DX9 card, like a 7950GT.

Actually, he's right. I did some research: the 8600GT is better and cheaper than the 8800GTS.

*sigh* Do you really think that they would have a lower end card, that is older, have better HD video rendering capabilites? No.

Check this link:
http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/geforce_8800gt_features_uk.html
About half way down they start talking about that purevideo 2.0 stuff.

Yes, I do... Your link does nothing to back up your argument!

Further, look here:
http://www.nvidia.co.uk/page/geforce8.html

Support note 2:
2 PureVideo HD support is currently only available on Microsoft Windows Vista for GeForce 8500 and 8600 graphics processors. Visit our drivers page for the latest information on upcoming Windows XP driver support.

What are the last two letters on the graphics card name for? GT...GTS....MTV...blah. What do those mean? Are they important?

well these letters are very important.
cuz they decide whether the vga card is gd or BETTER OR Powerful.
example THE 8800 GT is very gd, BUT 8800 GTX is better.there many kind of VGA the letters makes difference.

u must be wrong nevertheless nvidia will be a dumb company.
the 800 GTS is More powerful than 8800GT which is more powerful than 8600GTS.
FORGET ABouT THE 8600.
even the 800GTS 320 & 640MB are not as powerful as the 8800 GT or GTS,
well and off course the power ofGTX and the ultra is imaginary where no card can beat it.

Actually the 8600GT is better than the 8800GTS. So the 8600GT is only a small step below the 8800GTX.
