Why are FTP clients preventing me from editing files?

I have recently been trying to make my own website, and when I recently ran into the problem of an HTTP ERROR 500 appearing on my site which made it impossible for me to reach my admin dashboard (wordpress) I came to the conclusion that I would have to resolve the issue by editing some files through FTP. At first I tried to do so with FileZilla, but that didn't work. Just in case it was a problem with FileZilla itself I tried to do the same thing but with WinSCP instead. However, whenever I try to edit a file in either of these programs, the program REFUSES to edit anything and instead leaves me with a 0 byte file. This has resulted in me being left with a completely clear 0 byte wp-config.php file that I cannot edit in any way since the program doesn't let me.

This: https://ibb.co/LrVpCcG is the error message that pops up in WinSCP every single time I try to edit any file. A similar error message shows in FileZilla.

Has anyone encountered a similar problem before or has got any idea what is causing this to happen? I'm assuming it's a server related problem but again, I am a complete beginner when it comes to things like this and all my knowledge comes from online tutorials and youtube videos so I'm very lost on what to do. This problem has brought my website development to a standstill as I am unable to access WordPress admin or make manual file edits, hindering any progress.

When all else fails login to the DA hosting control panel use the file manager (which has an editor). Try and recover the files.

The HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) 500 Internal Server Error! Server/script encountered an unexpected condition that prevented it from fulfilling the request.

Sadly it seems like i am not able to edit the wp-config through the control panel file manager either. When I try to do so, it says that the file was saved successfully but when i reload the file it did in fact not save successfully and is still a completely empty 0 byte file.

Check file permissions, create new file different name save code, if successful rename file. is it just the config file? What is the site url? It may be the account, seems like it would the WP script was broke.

I cannot create a new file, when i try to upload a file to public_html it just uploads as a 0 byte file. I can create a new empty file but i cannot edit it, it refuses to save and just remains as a 0 byte file. It is every file in public_html, not just config. The site url is https://culinarycomforts.elementfx.com/.
