Yes, widgets are free and you can get them Widgets.Yahoo.com if you own a Windows PC.

do they lag any bit?
you can always uninstall them right? (stupid question but hey some are weird DLL's taht never go away)

They haven't caused any performance slips on my laptop. 'Lag', nope - I have yet to notice network problems.

And yes, you can uninstall them.

lol everyones switching to the royale theme after i posted that link to it..
it owns the default blue
and the start menu looks sweet
