I currently have my gateway/access point in my living room giving a signal to my computer wirelessly. If I move my gateway/access point to a smaller room in the house (closer to my computer) will my connection become worse?

also, later this weekend, ill need help configuring the wifi on a computer that just arrived today

You could have outside interference aswell if you live in a dense area.

Check that you have it all secure too...people might be clogging up your network by 'stealing' your internet signal.
