I'm not sure what happened. I was working on my site then suddenly it popped an error saying:

Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can't contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host's database server is down.
  • Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
  • Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
  • Are you sure that the database server is running?
If you're unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

What's happened? Can anyone help? I've checked my username, password, and hostname and all are correct. Please help!

I know it sounds obvious, but many people forget to prefix thir db name and db user with their cPanel name!

Also check MySQL is up.

no, the names are correct. The site was working perfecetly the past couple days and this morning all the way up till 20 minutes ago or so. I was literally editing it, hit save and this error appeared. I wasn't messing with the database at all. I even re-uploaded back ups of the files I was editing just in case.

Also, my cPanel is acting strange. The text menus on the side aren't displaying and there is some coding showing up in the mail sections. I already checked the sever up/down threads and it shows everything is online. I am completely lost.

Check on the database in phpmyadmin. Make sure it's intact. My mysql is still working.

Go into cPanel > MySQL > Link the accout to the database again, as it may have been dropped.

The admins are working on the server so please wait. Cpanel is also offline so that tells me its being fixed. They are trying to fix the RVSkin issue.

I have had the same problem with two previously working databases (wordpress and SMF) for a couple of days now. They were setup through fantastico so I doubt it is something I broke and it seems a coincidence that they are both down and yet the status of MySQL is up. I can't manually add the mysql user through cpanel because as dork313 mentioned the interface is all messed up. The config files look fine so please help.

cPanel looks like it's working now, so just go back and add the same user that is in your WP-config file and give it permissions for your WP database.
