Xbox 360 copy protection cracks

Hackers have taken the first step towards breaking the anti-piracy system on Microsoft's Xbox 360 game console. A group of crackers called Team PI Coder says it has discovered the basic workings of the console's file system.

The information has helped the group dig out the raw data from the console for 13 Xbox 360 games.

In response Microsoft said its console had several security systems in place that would prevent pirated games being played on it.

Starting point

Information about the work of Team PI Coder was posted to a Dutch piracy site along with the raw data from the games. There was also links to a small program the group produced that helps to extract the data.

In the text file with the extracted data, the PI Coders admit that not much can be done with the data.

"You can't run these dumps yet, but you will be able to sooner or later," reads the information file.

The crackers have not managed to get the data off game disks, instead they have dug out the version of the game that the Xbox 360 creates when gamers start playing.

The crackers said they were releasing the raw data to help other hacking groups start the task of working out how the Xbox 360 tries to stop piracy.

"So the first task is done," wrote Team PI in the information files. "We hope this encourages all hackers, coders and crackers out there to take up the challenge."

Using the raw data could prove a challenge because the extraction has left intact the protection systems that ensure that copies will not run on an Xbox 360.

The non-standard format of Xbox 360 DVDs also means that a PC DVD drive will not read them either.

A spokesman for Microsoft said there had been a series of improvements to the Xbox 360 that protect it against cracking.

He said that hardware on the system only allows Microsoft certified and signed programs to run on the console. This meant that copied games would not be recognised by the system and would not run.

I think that that is a bunch a bull. Before you know it, you will be able to run those iso's on your computer... well not really, because your computer hardware might not be able to take it... but it should be posible... idk what im talking about any more... )

Well this was very interesting. I enjoyed reading it.

"So the first task is done," wrote Team PI in the information files. "We hope this encourages all hackers, coders and crackers out there to take up the challenge."

That made me laugh though. If MS finds them, they're.. gonna be spanked.

But this adds on to the problem the X360 had with crashing. MS didn't take enough time to perfect such a great product, but rushed it, sacrificing quality.

How sad.

lol technically you CAN network an xbox with a pc
but dont expect any special functions
all you'd be able to do is play xbox live if you're subscribed..

I'd love to see how well how my computer would be able to handle Halo 2.

And I'd love to see how the non-upgraded PC's will crash to the ground when they try. (Umm.. j/k.)

The average PC today is better than the top-of-the-line consoles. Most TVs (especially the HD ones run at 640res. allowing whatever is projected; at a higher res., to appear better looking). I believe the consoles project images at 640 or 800res. to make their graphics seem amazing. But in the end, get yourself a low-end graphics card and your competing at XBOX360 and PS3 level. :eek:wned:

this is a pretty nice find. However, there's probably bootlegs of xbox 360s in china or india (they also have a TON of pirated DVDs there)

everything gets cracked eventually, i dont understand why they bother putting so much money and time into r n d of copy protections...there is some bigger nerd somewhere to undo it anyways lol

Yeah but what proportion cracks/hacks their consoles? They make it hard enough for only the ones who really want it do so, leaving the majority with unaltered consoles. Also when they find cracks the console companies realease newer versions as fixes, eg the slim ps2.

It was the same thing with PSP. People were like: "Oh my god, it's impossible to crack a UMD! UMD burners don't exist!" After about 2 months or so, they cracked it and it's now possible to play illegal games on PSP.

Nothing's perfect.

It's crazy what you can do to the PSP (by hacking). I don't own one, but if you see the magazines over here, it's crazy. Nerdy Japanese people...
