The latest issue of Game Informer has an exclusive interview with J. Allard, in which the Chief XNA Architect revealed that Microsoft has not yet announced the different variations of the Xbox 360.

"I don't think it's a one-size-fits-all [approach] over the next five-year horizon." Allard told Game Informer, opening the possibility to the much rumored HD DVD replacement of the DVD drive in the near future.

Back in June, Todd Holmdahl, Corporate Vice President of the Xbox Product Group at Microsoft, revealed exclusively to TeamXbox.com that Xbox 360 games do not require the HDD or a Memory Unit for them to work. Allard seems to confirm Todd’s comments:

"We've said, 'Hey look, don't bank on the hard drive always being there,'" Allard revealed that Microsoft has instructed developers. "There may be a scenario in the future where we don't want to have a hard drive, and in that case, we have to make sure that the games that you've created are accessible to the broadest possible audience."

It has been reported by various analysts that the Xbox 360 might ship in two versions, one which will not include the detachable hard drive unit.

After the recent comments by Allard, can we expect two Xbox 360 SKUs, with one not including the hard drive unit? Would this basic SKU cost the traditional $299 launch price? What would a second SKU include? How much would it cost? //source

This issue has been floating around for a long time, I would prefer it with a HD since I would be using it for storage and such.

But I hope the price isn't that much bigger.

I refuse to believe Game Informer about anything, but if it does come with a hard disk then I would buy it for backup.

I don't really like the idea of an xbox without a hard drive, or at least any console without a hard drive. Most people like to store their music on their xbox. So, its pointless to take the hard drive away.

This is not very strange to me. They will make more money by selling it sepretly. Like what Sony might also do.

Sony had separate hard drives for their ps2, it was a flop- mainly because no one built anything that used it because it was an after market perphial.

You know i think Microsoft puts out rumors like this to get responses from real gamers and casual gamers so that they can use these to their responses to their advantage. So I dont think you have anything to worry about. So dont worry, you say stupid things when you worry.:fear:

Every game is going to allow custom soundtracks. How do you play your music with no hd?

You don't want a cheap one since you want good rpm, 7,200? Not sure about most HD stats, and definately over 80GB since it fills up so much.

Don't get a cheap one, since a hard drive is used for files if you get some special sale one which has been like used 4 times before it will just break before you even get to fill it up!

Well it's out now the 360 will come in 2 forms one a simple core system just the console and a wired cotoller.
The second and more expensive package, comes with everything, HD, wireless controllers, remote, digi cam ect...

I think everyone's just going to buy the full package! I know I will when the price is right. I guess the smaller package is more like a present you but for someone.
