Most if not all skinning programs slow down your system; I personally don't bother with them. However, custom modded installable version of XP, i.e. Beast or Tiny XP work quite well with their default skins.

Spartan Erik, mind giving us a link to those? I'd like to see or try them out.

And I don't really mind the XP style. I'm assuming we are just talking about the 'Luna' theme that is for XP. Of course Vista(Aero) is much better....

I don't care much for those Luna themes though. I use the Royale XP style, as it is much nicer. Smoother really and the colors are nice. As for skinning programs(like WindowBlinds), I don't mind them too much, but they can get in the way or become a hassle. Using virtual pc software is an example of something that might be annoying to have WindowBlinds with(MS Virtual PC in FS mode), also it is more stuff to load and more memory to be used. Plus there are some apps that just don't work right. I could never use the Close button in Adobe Photoshop(not the main one, just the 'child' windows). It really was a problem. So those programs can sometimes have compatibility issues or functionality issues. There are solutions for modding your UXTheme(or whatever it is) file. I'm sure MS doesn't like that too much, but you can't prevent everything that goes on. Besides, they don't care about XP anymore anyways.

I used to have it, but I always end up deleting programs like that after a few weeks.

There's a hack somewhere on the internet that edits one of the Microsoft Windows files and allows you to install other themes without the 3rd party software...I'll try to dig it up.

Why pay for something you can get for free? All the have is a patched uxtheme.dll, nothing special.

I believe you are refering to the uxtheme.dll patch that is widely available. Even on softpedia.com.

If that isn't what you were talking about, then the uxtheme.dll patch does the same thing. Patches the Windows uxtheme.dll file on your computer and allows you to install tons of themes out there(forgot what site, think deviantart has a bunch). Luna Element is something I've really liked. And remember, no permanent changes! The patcher can restore your file as well if you wish.
