Learning how to start a forum on WordPress website, Is it best to use bbPress, PHPbb3 or some other?
Also is it best to have a separate database for a forum or to just use the existing wordpress database?

I would recommend using Simple Machines as your forum software. It'll take almost no work to set up. Link: http://www.simplemachines.org/ There are even things to help you bridge WP or other software with it. You only get two databases, so I'd recommend just using prefixes (assuming anything you install supports them).
