If you have a forum, choose the one you use. If you have more than one, choose the one you use more often. And if you don't currently have a forum, choose the one that you will most likely going to use.

I currently use SMF (Simple Machines Forums).

SMF here too ^^.
As Geoff has said, it's the best free forum soft.
If i would pay for a forum soft, i would definitely choose vBulletin.

I Love Vb, but Im also getting real handy with php nuke. Php nuke is a very nice forum, but its a little confusing to the average user to administer and set up.

SMF FTW!

Why? Firstly it is free, very popular (which = lots of skins, mods, etc.), and the coding is well documented, making it rather easy to tweak it yourself, unlink IPB which (to me) is rather complicated. Most of SMF's workings are within a couple of files :).

2nd place for me goes to YaBB. Dunno why. Why not?

Hey t2t2t what's txtforum like? Is it, like the name suggests (a text-based forum?). Is it comparable to phpBB in any area?

Google FTW: http://sourceforge.net/projects/txtforum1

Here's a forum that uses it: http://www.omnixray.com/forum/tf/forum.php ... it doesn't look all that glamourous to me, but looks like it'll get the job done if you just need something simple and don't want to have to deal with databases.

I thought of making something like this a while back, but never did because I thought it was a stupid idea (and I still think it is to some extent, but at least I now know I'm not the only one to think of it).

Mybb is great for a free forum. Easy to theme, and has many mods. Also is very similar to Vbulletin.

Actually it's HERE. It's easy to skin it (very much like PHPBB (someone even made PHPBB style *clicky*) skin code) and translate able.

So basically, it is very much like a text-based forum...I am surprised it still looks so presentable despite a lot of enhancements that it fails to have!
