Currently my Vista laptop boots in 1 minute and 30 seconds (and that's after disabling many startup applications, services, and "Windows Features" :eek4: ), whereas my XP desktop boots in under 30 seconds!

Immediately after the Aurora welcome screen, the screen turns black (cursor appears and is functional) and remains that way for approximately 30 seconds before finally loading the start bar, desktop background, icons, etc.

Any Vista users here know any other methods to speed up boot time?

If it's any help, it's Windows Vista Home Premium running on a 1.66 GHz Core 2 Duo, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB HDD, and integrated Intel chipset for graphics (don't plan on gaming on it, and I got it for a darn good deal)

You should try to turn off some Vista service which you dont need like : Tablet Service, Windows Media Network Sharing, media center...
Uninstall some Windows application like : Tablet Input..., Media Center in Control Panel (Turn windows feature on/off)

Sorry for My bad at English Language. I'm vietnamese student.

I've heard that ReadyBoost, which is a built in feature of vista, improves boot time by a lot, although you need like a usb flash device that can read/write quickly enough.

I forgot there was a trick where you can make your system boot in 10 seconds.

What are your processor and RAM specs?

If you want to get started now, run 'msconfig' and under the Startup tab you'll see a list of stuff. That list is of every program that runs the moment your system boots. Google the ones you are unfamiliar with (you can see the filepaths), and disable them.

Also, memory hogging software like Norton significantly slows down your boot time!

3.20GHz and 960MB of Ram

Good grief, your processor stats are even better than mine! I suggest you start going through msconfig's startup tab and disabling the various things that startup (some are important; if you're unsure if you need it, Google it)

Buy some more Ram or replace your ram with better which is better.

Or you can spend around 80 bucks on 2 1gig flash drives that support Ready Boost and it's kinda like virtual Ram.

He's right. The BIOS startup screen and the XP and Vista bootscreens take up 30 seconds just by themselves, there is NO WAY you can have your desktop fully loaded in 30 seconds and the harddrive light to shut off completely.

I run vista Ultimate with a Huuuuugggge amount of progs, i dont disable any windows features and allow everything on start up. My PC takes 19.4 seconds from power off to desktop.

After you have done all the basic stuff, you should do this:

Go into Vista event viewer-expand categories in the left-hand tree until you reach the Diagnostic-Performance\Operational entry.

To get to the startup problems, click Filter Current Log in the Actions pane on the right. Type 100.199 in the include exclude section, events 100-199 are specifically related to Boot Performance. Also use these settings:

Click on filter current log to the right hand side;

Logged: Any time
Event level: Tick all apart from Verbose and informtaion
Even sources: Diagnostics and performance
User: <all users>
Computer <all Computers>

The measurements are in milliseconds, so forget last three digits to get a reading in seconds. If your PC is taking a full 2 minutes. What's happening during that time? One way to find some info is to look for other events with the same time stamp.

The event log will show this possible problem - a service that should take 5 seconds to start took an extra 35 seconds. If this is a one-time incident, its not really important, but if it happens again, it's a clue to look for problems in the Services console.

Just dont be afraid to look around, it could save you some cash:D

The event viewer also provides a wealth of information on many other things.

Id advise you to check what i suggested before you do upgrading etc etc

(sorry if you already know this)

Only problem is that ultimate has more "administrative" features than home premium, and more advanced ones too.
