Hi,
I have recently installed an OSCommerce store here on x10.

I have a couple of questions which I am currently not too sure about so I am asking your opinions and knowledge of x10 to see if you can help me...

1st. SSL : I undersatnd that this is some sort of secure server, am I correct?
If so, should I need one if using an oscommerce store using peoples details?
DOes x10 provide one of these SSL server's and if so how do I use it?

I also notice that on some websites there is a padlock in the tool bar to show it is a secure site along with an 's' after 'http', so 'https'...
Is this possible to protect my customers and do I really need it?
If none of this is possible, would password procecting my files be good enough?

OK...

2nd Domain : Sorry to also trouble you on this, but I am thinking of buying my own domain and I understand that it is pretty easy to add a parked domain to x10...
Basically my main question here is for example, if I buy a domain that is 'example.co.uk' then when someone types that into their address bar, does it go to 'example.x10hosting.com' once it has accessed the site or will it stay as 'example.co.uk' while the user is on the site?
I hope you understand what I mean, and if you require more information, please let me know...

Thanks for all help in advane!!!
Joey

It is very important to get SSL if you are handling personal data. SSL encrypts data before being sent to the server. I am not sure where to get it because I have never used it, but Corey said it is about $1 a month, pretty cheap!

Hello. Lets see if we can answer your questions.

1. You will need to purchase an SSL certificate. Once you have one of these, x10 can allow you to use SSL on your account. The padlock you notice is stating the site / page you are on is "secure". If you get an SSL certificate, on the pages where information needs to be secure, you will see this padlock.

2. If you set up the domain name on your account, when visitors come, they will see your domain name, and not the x10 subdomain.

Ok thanks for this information!
Any ideas where I can get an SSL certificate from?
Are they expensive?

Your best bet is to do a search on Yahoo or Google for SSL Certificates. Depending on the company you purchase one through, it can become a bit pricey.

Really? I wouldn't have thought this going through a paypal checkout, but anyway you definately know better than what I do...

I don't want to sound a moaner or anything but are all SSL certificates this expensive some (and from what I understand, the better ones) being about £150. per year.
Is there no cheaper option, I found some for under £50 but thats still quite a bit per year for a website like mine not bringing in BUNDLES of income, not yet anyway.

Also when I get this SSL certificate is it simple to intergrate it into my site hosted by x10?

Yes. Unfortunately, they are that much. Its due to what they are used for. And yes, I believe they are easily set up. As I haven't had to deal with one, I can't promise anything - but I don't think they are hard to set up.

Comodo provides free email signing/encryption certificates (which is quite reasonable ;) ), so I've looked on there for you and they're £35.95/year if you buy it for five years, otherwise, around the £50 mark. They also offer a 90-day 'trial', which would give you three months to see if you want to carry on with your website, and if you'll be able to recoup the investment for the certificate during the sales process.

I know that when using online shopping sites, I look for whether it's a secured connection when going any further than browsing the shopping basket.
