Personally, I like both KDE and Gnome, but I like KDE a little more and use that on my computer as my desktop. I like the look of KDE/Qt applications more than Gnome. Also, even though I like many Gnome/GTK applications, I do like more KDE/Qt applications. So, I have ended up with a KDE desktop with many GTK applications installed.

I was wondering what other people think about KDE and Gnome and which is more popular on this forum. I would also like to know what people think about the other X Windows Desktops.

I would go for KDE. I prefer GTK to QT so GNOME wins in that regard, but I have only heard bad things about GNOME. I also find that GNOME may be even more bloated than KDE.

But, I prefer Xfce to both of them, because it's lighter and uses GTK. Even better though is a lightweight window manager like openbox.

I like KDE, but I do have a few Linux distro ISOs sitting around that use GNOME, so I haven't experimented betweek the two, that's all.

For a "super light" window manager I really like IceWM. I only require a light window manager rarely, but when I do use one I use IceWM.

I installed the kubuntu-desktop package on a Ubuntu install.
Then I disabled the gdm service.
