What's with the annoying hidden adverts?

Using Opera and Firefox I have misaligned adverts apppearing on mouse-over of the margins in the forums, but they don't appear in IE.
I find them really annnoying and wouldn't mind if they stayed visible all the time, or just weren't there, or at least were lined up properly! Anyone else think like this?

Edit to add: I notice they've disappeared altogether now I've logged in.

I see, a clever ploy to entice people to log-in ;)

I've just realised I haven't seen them before as I used to be logged in all the time as it's so great here

It's to monetize the traffic from google... we get a lot of visitors to just read old threads. The leaderboard ad at the top also disappears once you reach a certain level of posts :)

Ooh how many posts?

Although I am ashamed to say that I have AdBlock Plus installed. I am such a cheat. Sorry :( You should still get the hits though.

They are a bit annoying, but only because they're misaligned.

Actually, I don't think advertisements receive hits when blocked, seeing as the entire ad script is being prevented from loading.

:p Mine too.
They spiked real mem usage on my mac (safari is usually at 128mb usage) to 800mb usage while compiling apache. :p Usually it doesn't do that. At least they go away when I login :)
