Hi,

I have a main domain of exebatteries.com with an add on domain of www.targetnews.net. They have both been working fine for months but the Target News domain has suddenly stopped working, the domain is still pointed at x10's servers and I can see the site at http://targetnews.exebatteries.com but all I see at http://www.targetnews.net is a kind of error page showing some links.
I've spent the last 24 hours trying to figure out what's gone wrong with no success and would really appreciate some help please.

Regards,
Chris.

Check your domain settings on cPanel, and also check your account hasn't been attacked. On the domain you pointed to, the directory contains a saved ebay welcome page, which suggests that someone might have been trying to set up an ebay spoof there. Both domains point to the correct server, so the server is simply providing the wrong content, so check the settings.
An alternative is that you simply deleted the wrong content on your webspace.

Thanks for the reply, I checked my domain settings in cPanel and they haven't been changed since I set them up and they were working. I'm sure I haven't deleted any of the pre-installed folders. So it seems I may have had an attack as you say, is there anything I can do about it now?

I'm not too sure that it was an attack, since the correct files are still available. Check in cPanel that the addon domain is definitely pointing to the correct folder: the data is definitely on the server, since you can still access it through http://targetnews.exebatteries.com/ . Just change the settings for targetnews.net to point to the same folder as the subdomain that is working. If that doesn't help it's a server issue.

What's making me wondering is why the folder that targetnews.net points to contains a saved html page of both ebay and a spanish (?) bank.

(I'm having a suspicion that someone else on your server also added targetnews.net as their domain, and since there is no verification as such, the domain now points to their webspace. This is highly hypothetical.)

Both my add-on domain and the subdomain point to public html/targetnews.net

The guy I am making the site for bought the targetnews.net domain from 123-reg.co.uk and it is locked, is it actually possible that someone could do what you suggest?

I just checked and the page has now changed, the E-Bay link and other stuff has been replaced by more ads and links.

I would start a support ticket on this (higher up users could just escalate the thread), since your settings are fine, and it is very likely a server problem.

Taking over a domain as I mentioned might work, since you have set up your domain to point to X10 nameservers. When I add a domain on X10, all that is needed for the domain to work is that the domain points to X10 nameservers, and then for me to add it. X10 doesn't check whether you actually own the domain, only that it points to X10 nameservers. However CPanel should protect against this...

Edit: I just tested this "exploit": it didn't work: i.e. there were no complaints on adding the domain, but it didn't appear in my domain list. So it shouldn't work. However I am on a different server.
