How can I find out what the x10host SQL hostname (ip address or domain name)? Since I can add a remote server, I thought it would be possible to manage the database using an external database app.

Never mind, there's a similar posted today that I didn't see before. Seems like it's not possible for free hosting

The short answer is - you can do that

Remote access to a MySQL database (both incoming and outgoing from your account) is disabled on all x10hosting's free-hosting accounts - [ Basic (no upgrade) ] and [ Prime ] and [ Illuminated ]
