IMHO PHPBB is the best free one. It also has quite a big bunch of hacks and mods. If you want a full CMS based on phpBB I recommend Icy Phoenix. Demo : free forum

I love IPB forums. They are compatable with so many things that would actually be useful to the community. The setup is very simple, and it's a very smooth process adding in features. Demo : free forums

http://www.forumotion.com has loads more features and is the most updated. It is quite easy to use and has great modifications. So I am going with Forumotion.

Forumotion.com is good.. I belong to a website on there, have been on it for the last 4 1/2 yrs. We post, put up pics, etc. no major problems... very easy to use. You can set up your forum how you want plus they have a great support site for problems or questions.

IBP is awesome. Vbulletin isn't too bad, if you're going for a free forum, PHPBB has a great backing community. Demo : forum hosting

I currently use PHPBB3 with my halo 2 clan forums. I have no complaints at all. The theme was easy to install, The admin panel is straight forward and easy to navigate. I highly suggest PHPBB3. Just try it out on this host : free forum
