All pages show 404, even though I have files in public_html

I was cleaning up some files on my site and I must have deleted something I shouldn't have, because all of a sudden, any time I try to go to a page on my site, I get a "404 page not found" error - not a regular browser 404 error, but something generated server side, because the font is different and there's no explanation of what a 404 means. If I go to my site's home page via https instead of http, I get a different message: "Apache is functioning normally". What can I do to fix this? Thanks!

No, no URLs on my site work anymore. I do have a local copy of the files, but that doesn't include some symbolic links that I deleted that were pointing at public_html. I thought those were not needed, and I didn't think to write down their names before deleting them. They had names like 123456.public_html but the 123456 was a random string of numbers and maybe also letters. I don't know why these shortcuts would be necessary for my site to run but I'm guessing by deleting them I broke it somehow. If there was some way to look up what they're supposed to be, I could put them back. But I've never heard of web hosts needing several randomly named links pointing at the web root to work...

I'm thinking, if I had a way to reset my FTP to its default state, with whatever symbolic links need to be set up being created again, I could just upload all my files again and it should work.

Your site works just fine as long as you do NOT use https (regular http works fine), this would be due to SSL not being enabled on the account, I have however now enabled it for the account.
To get SSL fully functional you need to enable it for the domain under domain setup and also obtain a SSL certificate, you can get one free through DirectAdmin under SSL Management.
