Very informative. Relating to point 4... If you have a compatible router, changing the router firmware to be DD-WRT installs a DNS caching server on the router itself which seems to work well.

I use hibernate on a daily basis, which is why my PC says it's been 'up' for weeks... Except the odd restart from updates! I actually use Vista's Hybrid Sleep... It stores the contents of memory to disk, then puts the PC in Standby, so if the mains electricity is kept on it resumes near...

Repeatedly zipping will actually make the file bigger due to the file header, so that's not such a good idea.

Depends what you're compressing. If it's "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" a million times, I'd have thought that could shrink quite well. Most other things? Probably not. The likes of Ubuntu, Knoppix, etc. would have an easy life if that were possible!
