Look at your files for a .htaccess file. Rename it htaccess.txt and see if that makes a difference. Make sure the permissions on your folders are 755 and the permissions on your files are 644.

If most of your space is images, I would recommend using a program such as FileOptimizer. Download all your images, process them with FileOptimizer and then re-upload them. This should free up some space.
