I use id's for AJAX and Javascript, but I also mix them with CSS. Classes are nice for mass styling but for one thing I like to use id's.

The portal has to load a lot more than the pixel page does. There are so many MySQL queires and tables in the Portal that it does seem like it lags.

Every time I choose something from the second drop down menu I get an alert message giving me a number 1-10. Is that the value(s) returned from the AJAX PHP file?

You could use a lot of programs. There is GameMaker, Flash(Free Trial) - You can find free versions of flash too - Then there are the serious programming languages you can use to make games. JAVA, and C are examples.

Well, I code games in Flash and I'm interested seeing if I could make a text based game with PHP and Javascript (AJAX xD). You should try and create something for yourself, even if it has no use at the moment.
