    Should we target GeoCities users?

You can piggyback on my free hosting account if you want. I'm using mine for tutorials as well, since my paid is my primary now :)

    Apache is working message

Corey is doing some MAJOR updates right now. You will all be placed on servers that are much more powerful and should perform much better for you. Hold tight few a few more hours and everything should be great after that :)

    Should we target GeoCities users?

I think a migration script would not be in the best interest of the users coming over. It's going to contain a bunch of broken links, missing images and backgrounds, and probably some yahoo ad codes. They would have all the same problems if they copied the files themselves, so I think the...

    Looking for more staff..

Thanks, Russ. I'll do my best to make sure you don't regret this  I know you probably don't want to disclose too many details on what an AM needs to know, but could you be a little more specific? Is client side knowledge enough, or do I need to know admin side stuff too?

Using Java with MySQL on x10

This should help: http://www.javaworld.com/javatips/jw-javatip34.html Just replace the perl part with php :)

    Should we target GeoCities users?

EDIT: Beat me too it, Zen-r :P That's half the battle :) I think the part that is really going to make our new X10 members nuts is how much more complicated CPanel is compared to geocities. Maybe if we just write a tutorial how to take files from geocities and make them display on X10, that...

Using Java with MySQL on x10

I think in the way you're using it, there is no advantage over embedding the data or a link to a static data file (even if the file is able to produce data dynamically, you can't change the query sting dynamically to fetch different data). Either way you have the same data. I would think it is...

    Should we target GeoCities users?

I tried to trick Geocities into letting me register a new account using wayback machine, but it didn't work. I guess they did more than delete the links to the registration page :(

    Looking for more staff..

I'd also like to contest the no infractions stipulation. I made a stupid mistake when I first started at X10 and I'd really love to be on staff, even if I started out as a moderator until you trusted me as a higher staff member. I'd like to talk to you about it in private, or even here in the...

    Should we target GeoCities users?

It also eliminates the possibility of an automated script. Without FTP access, I don't know how we can transfer the files, other than the user typing in the name of all 5 of their HTML files and using something like file_get_contents() (which I think will fail as X10 blocks requests like this)

    Mail

I can confirm that the mail is returned "undeliverable" I wonder if the mail() function works because you are sending and receiving from the same computer. MX lookups show that eisnercomputers.co.uk has no MX records. This may be because x10's servers are under construction. It makes sense that...

    Should we target GeoCities users?

From the massive amount of geocities accounts I've accidentally stumbled into looking for things, I have a feeling they don't ban people too often ;) If you have any info on how geocities works, I think we can at least get a "third party" geocities to X10 migration tool that Corey can evaluate...

Are people on the net saner than they used to be?

This is actually on topic, Kayos is a shining example of why we can have a forum that is not a chaotic bunch of spammers and flamers :) It's funny to think that even "off topic" can get, well, off topic. I think that idea reflects the more mature web 3.0 as opposed to the "bad old days."

    Should we target GeoCities users?

I wish I could sign up for a geocities account or get my hands on one that someone owns. I would write a tutorial/script to do it. I don't know if they have FTP, or any sort of databases, if they use Apache or IIS, or anything else. I thought they were strictly HTML only, no databases, no FTP...

    Update

Yes, definitely. I don't know of any other free host that would be doing half of what you have done in the past few days. If you keep this up, I'll be switching back to free from paid ;) Thanks to all the staff at X10!

Are people on the net saner than they used to be?

Poor Zen-r. It's ironic that in a thread talking about how people on the net are supposedly nicer than before, we're pretty mean :(
