If you have a PHP site, make sure any executed .php files are not Group/World writeable. ie, permissions of 0755 and 0644 are ok, but 0777 and 0666 will cause 500 errors. Also, the error_log that PHP generates almost never shows reasons for 500 errors. You have to look at cPanel --> Error Log .
